Cruising Back to Godhead

Cruising back to Godhead

I was doing books at the ferry terminal, where a cruise ship was docked for a day.

While distributing something got in my eye and made it terribly itchy. I thought of taking a break, but then decided to tolerate this and go on.

Two minutes later, a young Asian passed by. I showed him Chant and Be Happy, and he stopped. I said it was a book about stress. He said he didn't speak English and that he had to report back to the cruise ship for his shift in five minutes.

I said that the book was about simple living and high thinking.

He kept on saying, “I have to go. I have to go.”

But he wouldn't leave.

So then I said, “These days, circumstances force family members to be away from each other.”

Thankfully, he could relate to that. He really missed his wife and kids and just wanted to retire from this cruise job. I requested a donation. He dug into his pocket and took out a bundle of US $100 notes.

Looking at me, he said, “I have no change.”

When I asked if he has an ATM card, he showed me a Chinese card.

He suddenly realized that he had just one minute to get back to the boat, and he started stepping away.

I suddenly found myself asking, “Why don't you give a $100?”

I couldn't believe myself. I hardly ever have enough courage to ask for $20. This wasn't me.

He took out his bundle of notes again, looked back and forth between John Lennon's picture and his notes, and said, “O Jesus, for John Lennon.”

He handed me a $100 note and started to walk away with Chant and Be Happy. I urged him to wait and gave him a Gita and three other books.

His eyes popped out and he smiled and said, “Why don't you sell me a dictionary as well?”

I said, “Aren't you going to be late?”

He jogged away with the books.

Lord Caitanaya's shower of mercy, ki jaya!
