A Brahmacari’s Prayer Fulfilled
by Suresvara dasa
One evening I was selling books at the back of Tower Records on Sunset Boulevard, in Hollywood. It was nine o'clock at night and completely dark. I stopped a strikingly beautiful woman, and showed her a Krishna book. She liked the pictures, so to make a little conversation before asking her to buy one, I asked what kind of work she did.
She replied that she was a prostitute.
I was a little taken back. I had been a brahmacari for four years, and often felt a deep sense of loneliness. I was speaking with a beautiful prostitute in a dark and quiet place. I thought about the humor of the situation, and about how Lord Krishna might be testing me. I prayed internally: "Lord Krishna, I don't wish to entertain any other desire at this time except that you allow this person to purchase thisKrishna book and become your devotee. Please fulfill my desire."
The woman bought the Krishna book and went on her way. I didn't think much more about it. I had done my duty, and I too went on mine.
