An Atheist Has A Change Of Heart On The Spot
While distributing in Silicon Valley, we met a Gujarati family at the first door we knocked on.
The wife said, “We know all this,” and was about to close the door. Then we asked her to call her husband.
When Sankirtan Prabhu was at the door explaining about the Bhagavatam to the husband, his eldest daughter, Dipti, was just sitting on the sofa. Sankirtan asked her whether she was depressed about anything, and she said she is an atheist and wouldn’t be interested in this. The father immediately asked us to come inside. Dipti had a lot of medals and had also been the Fremont Student of the Year. A very nice conversation took place between Dipti and Sankirtan Prabhu.
Sankirtan: When did you start thinking like this?
Dipti: I grew up in a religious family. The more I went into science, the more I stopped believing in all this.
Sankirtan: Who are we? Where are we coming from?
Dipti: electrons, protons, positrons, etc.
She tried giving the answer in terms of chemicals. After she couldn’t proceed, we asked her why after death no one can be revived if life is just chemicals. She said the scientists are still trying to discover that.
Sankirtan then tried to explain to her that we are souls, and how we change bodies birth after birth. There was still no reaction. Then there was a discussion about Darwinian theory. She believes in that, and Sankirtan asked her to Google what Darwin’s mental state was when he claimed that.
Sankirtan tried to explain her that it is not good to blindly follow anything, even science. He encouraged her to carefully read books like the Bhagavatam that had already explained scientific topics from another angle.
Finally she smiled after we had talked to her for nearly an hour, and then her parents agreed to take the set. She took some of the books (the Third and Fifth Cantos) and smiled and held them to her heart for the rest of the time we were there. Then to our surprise she said she loves Lord Krishna.
