“Cool dude” takes a book
Recently, at a book distribution seminar at the Melbourne temple, Vijaya Prabhu said that some people are looking for the Gita.
I was thinking: I have rarely been so lucky to meet such people.
One sunny weekday afternoon I went out with my four year old. On normal days it's always a struggle for me to distribute books, and with the temperatures soaring on this day, there were few people on the street.
A somewhat Indian-looking guy passed by. I did not think it was worth stopping him. He looked like the “cool dude” kind, and I didn't think he would wait to listen.
Following him was an Australian girl who seemed to be searching for an address. I put the Bhagavad-gita in her hand and gave my usual pitch.
She was keen, but not so keen, and said, “This book is too thick for me.” Eager to not let her go, I was looking for a smaller book. Just then I noticed that the boy was waiting for her – they were together. The boy was listening and walked toward us. I was sure he would dissuade her.
But instead he looked at the book in her hand and said, “Oh, this is the Bhagavad-gita.”
The girl replied, “Yes, I have heard of this before,” and nodded in agreement. “OK, we will take this one only,” was her next statement.
On asking, I found out that the girl is Australian and her friend Iranian. Both of them gave a donation and went away chanting “Gauranga”!
