Hospital book Distribution

Parking Lots

I went on book distribution with a Bhaktin who is modest and would not like me to advertise her name in this story. She helped me see a new aspect of book distribution, so I must glorify her.

We set up a table in a parking lot where I'd had some luck distributing books in the past. However, only a few people bought books, and several hours had gone by.

She said to me, "I think we should distribute books in hospitals. Would it be all right if we went to a hospital after this?"

I am twenty years older, and I thought, "Oh, no, another sentimental devtoee who wants to do philanthropic work, another Good Samaritan." I pretended to be interested. But I hate hospitals!

Then we had lunch together, and she explained to me how she had spent one year and a half, full time, in and out of hospitals helping her young husband through horrible cancer therapy until his death. That was about the time she turned to Krsna in desperation, and she became a very sincere devotee.

I was so surprised, because I never even knew she had been married. So given her desire to go to a hospital we packed up and drove to a busy one here in L.A., and we stood outside the automatic doorway greeting dozens of workers, nurses, doctors, patients and relatives of patients. To my great surprise, all were much much more receptive than the people in the parking lot where we had the book table. It was an eye-opener, and a very sweet day for me. For our enthusiastic Bhaktin it was a chance to do something she had been longing to do ever since the death of her husband.
