Bryan Adams offers mangoes to soothsayer By Sangeetha Cavale

BANGALORE: Real life can be stranger than fiction and dreams are the stuff that life is made of. And sometimes, those dreams come true. Astrologer S K Jain got a call on Saturday from Dubai-based event organiser Padma Coram, saying that Bryan Adams wanted to call on him. Next morning at 10, Bryan Adams arrived at the Jain's residence on Wheeler Road in a hired Tata Sumo taxi, mangoes in hand. To say that the Jains were excited and happy to meet their VIP guest, would be an understatement.

Adams removed his footwear and spent an hour alone with Jain in his office. The two talked about astrology and spiritual matters. Adams was fascinated by the age-old palm leaves Jain showed him. The popular Udaya TV astrologer gave him a bottle of Ganga water, some Ayurvedic medicine for general health and an ISKCON book The Science of Self-Realisation.

Adams gave the astrologer his date of birth, time and place and got a tulsi mala, which had been given to Jain by the Udupi swamiji. Adams promptly wore it around his neck.

He showed keen interest in the scientific aspects of astrology. Adams is a pure vegetarian and doesn't eat eggs. When Jain, who is a Krishna devotee, told him that he too was vegetarian, Adams said, “Do you eat fish?''

"Oh, no."

"You are like me."

Adams was born on May 5, 1959, in Kingston, a three-hour drive from Vancouver in Canada. Jain says that the singer is a very lucky man because Mercury and Jupiter were rising in the eastern horizon when he was born.

The Jains were moved by Bryan Adams' simplicity and gentleness. After the private one-hour consultation with the astrologer, the singer hugged Jain and told him, “You have become my friend.'' He promises to come back to India to bathe in the holy Ganga.

In true Indian style, Adams was given a shawl and garland and a tilak was applied on his forehead before he left his new-found friends. He was surprised when Veena told him that she is the mother of an eighteen-year-old.

Sadly, Sandhya Jain could not see her hero as she had a BBM entrance exam to write in Christ College. She'd gone to his concert two days before and wound up with wounds on her feet. “I saw him from 100 feet and when he came home, I wasn't there,''she said mournfully.

Better luck next time, Sandhya.
