Monkeys Wash Potatoes

Srila Prabhupada

by Jaya Gurudeva Dasa

Srila Prabhupada once told a story about a group of monkeys on an island who started washing their potatoes, after seeing another group of monkeys that lived on the other side of the island washing potatoes. A similar thing happened in German Switzerland in the mid-nineties.

One of the most empowered book distributors I have ever met was distributing in a parking lot–when he saw a young man sitting in a nearby park. In fact, he sat there the whole afternoon. The devotee finally appoached him in the evening and asked if he would be interested in taking a book and give a donation.

The young man replied, "Not really . . . you see, I work at the city garbage processing plant, and I have fished out practically all of your books from the garbage, and I have already read them. They are absolutely fantastic! I was just watching you and admiring your brave efforts to spread such transcendental literature amongst such a thankless public."

The devotee asked the young man to come visit the temple sometime, and indeed, the young man did. He actually became a devotee, and started distributing Srila Prabhupada's transcendental blessings in the form of his books to readers through out the German-speaking countries.
