Srila Prabhupada on Book Distribution and cheating
The following is taken from the Prabhupada Memories videos, part 12: (Apologies for not having the name of the devotee who is speaking available.)
"In the middle of 1972, Srila Prabhupada wrote me a letter. At that time, there was no 'plain-clothes' Sankirtana. Everything was straight out saris, dhotis, tilak, telling people, "We're from Hare Krsna, please read a book about Krsna."
In the letter, Srila Prabhupada told me, "Make sure you sell books by preaching, not by cheating."
I was really taken aback by this. I thought, "what does he mean by this word 'cheating'?" What are we doing?
Then I wrote and asked him, "Srila Prabhupada, you mentionned 'sell books by preaching; not by cheating.' What exactly do you mean?"
His reply was, "If you act in consciousness that Krsna is the Supreme Proprietor, He is the only Enjoyer, and that He is the dearmost friend of all living beings, then you are not cheating. But if you act in any other consciousness, you are always cheating."
